US army seeks intelligence on Danish army installations in Greenland
The Americans are said to have gathered sensitive data on strategic sites across Denmark’s autonomous Arctic territory, in apparent violation of existing bilateral agreements between Copenhagen and Washington.
The revelations come as US President Donald Trump continues efforts to assert control over Greenland, the world’s largest island, which is rich in minerals but home to just 56,000 people. Trump argues that Greenland is crucial for countering Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic—a position rejected by officials in Copenhagen, Moscow, and Beijing.
The initiative has strained relations between the US and its European NATO allies, who oppose any changes to Greenland’s status and warn that Washington’s actions could undermine international law and alliance unity. In response, Trump announced tariffs on eight European NATO countries—Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland—after they sent symbolic military contingents to Greenland, interpreting this as resistance to his plans.
Analysts cited by reports expressed concern that US intelligence operations in the region may be intensifying. Danish authorities reportedly view the episode with particular alarm, fearing it could reflect political pressure from Washington or even preparations for the use of force.
Commenting on the matter, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen stated he was highly concerned, saying, ‘‘we do not spy on friends.”
